Scholarships awarded to essay winners

THORNPORT - AMVETS Post 51 recently announced the winners of its annual Americanism Essay Contest. Each winner receives a $500 scholarship.

They are:

+ Kristie Waller, daughter of Don and Laura Waller of Thornville. She participated in volleyball, cheerleading and is a member of the National Honor Society. Waller plans to attend Columbus State Community College and major in nursing.

+ Julie Melrose, daughter of Lori and Billie Melrose of Glenford. She participated in marching and concert bands, Show Choir, Stamp Church Youth Group and volunteered at the elementary school. Melrose will attend The College of Wooster.

+ Aaron Drake, son of David and Dora Drake of Thornville. He participated in football, baseball, track and wrestling. Drake will attend University of Akron and major in mechanical engineering.

+ Julia Pengledis, daughter of Billie and the late Pete Pengledis of Somerset. She was involved in student council, art club and 4-H. Pingledis will attend Ohio University-Zanesville and major in nursing.

+ David Mears, son of Anthony and Judith Mears of Thornville. He is part of a military family and spent most of his high school years at the American School in Germany. Mears will attend Devry University and major in network administration.

+ Rashelle Poston, daughter of Rob and Stephanie Poston of Thornville. She participated in student council, cheerleading, 4-H and the National Honor Society. Poston plans to attend Columbus State Community College and major in nursing.
