A funeral mass of the Resurrection celebrating the life of Catherine Grooms, 98, of Kirkersville; was held June 6th, 2007, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Buckeye Lake with Msgr. Frank J Meagher Celebrant. Burial followed at St Joseph's Cemetery, Lockbourne.
Catherine died at home Monday morning June 4, 2007, following a long illness. She was born October 5, 1908, in Columbus, the daughter of the late Raymond and Anastastia Murphy Weiland.
She was a graduate of the St. Joseph's Academy, Columbus, class of 1926. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Buckeye Lake, and the Mt. Carmel lights. She was a member of the Kirkersville Lions Club, and had been active at one time serving Meals-on-Wheels.
She assisted her daughter for many years at the Blue Goose Restaurant at Buckeye Lake, where she was lovingly referred to as "Grandma Goose."
Catherine is survived by her daughter, Judy Casto of Kirkersville; her sister, Clara Jane Durbin of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl G. Fries and William Grooms; her two sons, James Earl and Joseph Raymond Fries; and seven of her sisters and brothers.
At Catherine's request , there were no calling hours.
